The Influence of Young Voters on the 2024 Indonesian Election

The youth population, which is people younger than 40 years of age constitute about half (52%) of the total voter in Indonesian election for the year 2024. Generation Z and Millennials make up to almost two-thirds (56.45 %) out of this electorate; that is they are aged between seventeen to thirty The youth voter turnout, especially the Generation Z is likely to be high with their decisions being influenced by factors such as economic competence, welfare guarantees and integrity among others in candidates.

Nevertheless, there is a fear of voter abstention and unpredictable voting patterns because the young voters are dynamic in nature with about 51% open to change their choices for presidential election. The measures aimed at enhancing political participation and solving the problems facing young voters, for instance lack of trust in politics and apathy are still being pursued.

Gen Z, the generation born in a digital era is changing Indonesian politics. They are redefining political landscape with a strong social conscience and digital fluency. The preference for issue-based politics and independent candidates among Gen Z disrupts the party allegiances. They mobilize support through social media, disseminate information and ensure that leaders are held accountable. But they have challenges such as misinformation and voter suppression.

However, Gen Z is still hopeful and strives to change something.

In sum, the power of young voters especially Generation Z is a sign that there will be more democratic inclusion and responsiveness in Indonesia. They have the capacity to determine how elections will be conducted and what kind of nation it would grow into.
